Locality

Yooperlite is the trade name for fluorescent syenite rich in sodalite, a unique igneous rock that appears fairly ordinary in daylight but displays vibrant orange fluorescence under ultraviolet light due to its sodalite content. The original Yooperlite specimens were discovered along the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (the “U.P.”), giving the material its name. Similar fluorescent sodalite-bearing syenite is also found in Canada, particularly in Ontario, as well as parts of Greenland and Russia. Because of its remarkable UV response and durability, Yooperlite has become increasingly popular for carvings, spheres, palm stones, moons, towers, and decorative crystal pieces.
